Closed captions & SDH

Closed captions and subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) are more than accessibility tools – they can help you reach wider audiences too.

Accessible & savvy

  • Accessibility standards

I can work to FCC / ADA guidelines, streaming platform spec, or accessibility standards for the Latin American country you’ll be broadcasting in.

  • Sound description

Sound often tells just as much of a story as speech. Thoughtful, clear sound descriptions that keep viewers engaged.

  • Sound-off video

More and more people are consuming video content with their sound off, whether they’re on their daily commute, scrolling in bed, or trying to follow along without distractions, captions drive viewership.

  • Engaging readability

More than a tick-in-the-box, I make sure captions are paced and written to encourage readability and engagement while remaining faithful to the script.

Frequently asked questions

  • Every piece of video content is different, and although captioning is usually priced per video minute, it depends on the type of video, the quality standards you’d like me to adhere to, and any extra requirements you might have for the captions.

  • Generally, a professional captioner can get through around 20-30 minutes of video content per day. However, it may take longer for dialogue-heavy content such as interviews, telenovelas, or documentaries. I’ll provide an estimated turnaround time with every quote.

  • While the two have many similarities, their differences lie mainly in how they appear on-screen and how they’re encoded. If you’re unsure if you need closed captions or subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, please let me know and I’ll suggest the best solution for you.

  • Yes, this can be done for an additional charge. However, please note that this may not be up to broadcasting standard, depending on where the video will be shown.

  • I will need the video file, a list of people appearing on-screen, where the video will be broadcast, any style guidance, and any additional available information, such as scripts.

  • Yes, I always include one round of revision for every delivery. However, if there are changes to the video or feedback that is overwhelmingly preferential, this may incur an additional charge.
